WABG-TV's first broadcast was on October 20, 1959, as an independent station. The station quickly joined the CBS network, but switched to ABC after complaints from WJTV in nearby Jackson that they were encroaching on their coverage area (WJTV would serve as the Delta's default CBS affiliate until WXVT went on the air in 1981).

WABG offers a Fox affiliate on a digital sub channel. "Delta Fox" signed on September 13, 2006, the day after Fox net shut down. The nationwide Fox net channel originally provided Fox programming to cable subscribers in the Greenville/Greenwood market, which was one of the last markets to be offered the service. They originally planned to close down on September 1, 2006, but was delayed to September 12, 2006, to allow WABG time to quickly put a Fox affiliate on its digital sub channel.

October 29, 2007, WABG's ABC and Fox affiliates were sold to Charles Harker and the Commonwealth Broadcasting Group Inc.
