MISSISSIPPI LEVEE BOARD OFFICIALS WOULD LIKE TO REMIND MOTORISTS AND THOSE WHO LIKE TO USE FOUR-WHEEL VEHICLES THAT DRIVING ON THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER LEVEE AND THE BERM IS UNLAWFUL AND CREATES PROBLEMS FOR LEVEE MAINTENANCE. SIGNS ARE POSTED THE LENGTH OF THE LEVEE ABOUT DRIVING UP THERE BUT SOMETIMES PEOPLE USE FOUR-WHEEL AND OTHER ALL-TERRAIN VEHICLES TO DRIVE THE BERMS AND RUT UP THE GRASS WHICH CAN CREATE PROBLEMS. THE WASHINGTON COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT WILL BE WATCHING FOR SUCH ACTIVITY AND WILL MAKE ARRESTS ACCORDINGLY. NEW YEAR'S EVE IS THE TIME THAT SOME WILL LIGHT UP FIREWORKS AT THE STROKE OF MID-NIGHT WHILE OTHERS FIRE A FEW GUNSHOTS INTO THE AIR. BUT THE WASHINGTON COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT SAYS YOU MAY WANT TO THINK TWICE ABOUT FIRING OFF A FEW ROUNDS. ASSISTANT CHIEF BILLY BARBER SAYS THE WASHINGTON COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT IS WORKING CLOSELY WITH THE GREENVILLE POLICE DEPARTMENT TO MAKE SURE CITIZENS DON'T FIRE GUN SHOTS IN THE AIR IN CELEBRATION OF THE NEW YEAR. BARBER SAYS IT'S ILLEGAL TO DISCHARGE A FIRE-ARM IN THE CITY OF GREENVILLE AS WELL AS WASHINGTON COUNTY. LAST YEAR WASHINGTON COUNTY LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICIALS MADE SEVERAL ARRESTS FOR THIS CRIME. A NUMBER OF PEOPLE WHO WERE ARRESTED WERE CONVICTED OF FELONIES. AND JUST AS A REMINDER THAT WHEN BULLETS ARE FIRED INTO THE AIR THEY HAVE TO COME BACK DOWN SOMEWHERE.

Cleveland Rape Arrest
A BOLIVAR COUNTY MAN IS BEHIND BARS FOR A CHRISTMAS WEEKEND RAPE. 35-YEAR OLD JAMES JACKSON IS ACCUSED OF RAPING A FEMALE VICTIM IN THE DRIVEWAY OF AN ABANDON HOME ON HIGHWAY ONE JUST SOUTH OF ROSEDALE. THE ALLEGED CRIME HAPPEN ON DECEMBER 23RD AROUND 3-30AM. BOLIVAR COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT SAYS THE VICTIM ASKED JACKSON FOR A RIDE. INSTEAD OF TAKING HER TO HER DESTINATION HE TOOK HER TO THE ABANDON HOME. THAT'S WHERE SHE SAYS HE FORCED HIMSELF ON HER. RIGHT NOW JACKSON'S BOND HAS BEEN SET FOR FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS. HE STILL SITS BEHIND BARS IN THE BOLIVAR COUNTY CORRECTIONAL FACILITY.

Holiday travel report
STATE TROOPERS WERE OUT KEEPING OUR ROADS AND HIGHWAYS SAFE ACROSS THE STATE. ACCORDING TO MISSISSIPPI HIGHWAY PATROL MORE THAN FIVE THOUSAND CITATIONS WERE GIVEN OUT BETWEEN FRIDAY DECEMBER 21ST AND CHRISTMAS DAY. 168 OF THOSE CITATION WERE FOR SEAT BELT VIOLATIONS. WHILE 111 WERE GIVEN TO DRIVERS UNDER THE INFLUENCE. SIXTY DRIVERS GOT A TICKET FOR NOT HAVING CHILDREN IN CAR SEATS. ALSO, THERE WERE 5 HIGHWAY FATALITIES REPORTED OVER THE CHRISTMAS WEEKEND in Jackson, Starkville, Hattiesburg, Meridian and New Albany districts.. STATE TROOPERS WILL STILL BE OUT IN FULL FORCE UNTIL AFTER NEW YEARS. MHP OFFICIALS URGES DRIVERS TO BUCKLE UP AND NOT DRINK AND DRIVE THIS HOLIDAY SEASON.

Flood Museum
The Lower Mississippi River Museum uses hands-on displays to help people understand the lore and power of the world's third-largest watershed. The museum was built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and opened in August in downtown Vicksburg, Miss. Director Sherry Jones says it's attracting about 2,000 visitors a month. It features displays about the 1927 flood that deluged 27,000 square miles and displaced more than 160,000 families from Illinois south. Interactive kiosks offer glimpses into the lives of people who've traveled on or lived by the river for centuries. Visitors can wander through the Motor Vessel Mississippi IV, dry-docked next to the building. From 1961 to 1993, the Corps of Engineers used the four-level towboat for its work, and the Mississippi River Commission used it for river inspections.

A MAJOR GAS LEAK IN WINONA SENDING NEARLY 100 RESIDENTS INTO THE RAINY COLD WEATHER. MONTGOMERY COUNTY EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT OFFICIALS CONFIRMING A LEAK ON NORTH UNION STREET THIS EVENING LEADING TO THE EVACUATION OF PEOPLE IN THAT AREA. EMERGENCY RESPONDERS AND THE UTILITY COMPANY ARE ON SCENE WITH THE HOPES OF RETURNING PEOPLE TO THEIR HOMES SAFELY TONIGHT. HOWEVER, AUTHORITIES ARE CURRENTLY WORKING WITH THE RED CROSS IN SETTING UP A SHELTER.

Feeding the needy
SENATOR'S PLACE HOSTING A FREE CHRISTMAS DINNER FOR THE COMMUNITY THE RESTAURANT PACKED WITH SEVERAL COMMUNITY MEMBERS READY FOR A HOLIDAY MEAL. STATE SENATOR AND RESTAURANT OWNER WILLIE SIMMONS AND HIS FAMILY SERVED OVER 200 PEOPLE, WHICH INCLUDED SENOR CITIZENS, NEEDY FAMILIES, AND ANYONE WHO WANTED TO COME OUT FOR A FREE DINNER. THOSE WHO COULD NOT MAKE IT TO THE EVENT RECEIVED HAND DELIVERED MEALS FROM LOCAL VOLUNTEERS.

Grenada Hospital Selection
THE GRENADA COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS SELECTS A PROPOSAL FOR THE LONG-TERM LEASE OF GRENADA LAKE MEDICAL CENTER. THE GRENADA STAR REPORTING THE SUPERVISORS SELECTING THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSISSIPPI MEDICAL CENTER'S PROPOSAL THIS WEEK, AND GRENADA COUNTY AND UMMC WILL IMMEDIATELY BEGIN WORKING TOWARD THE CLOSING OF THE LEASE TRANSACTION, EXPECTED TO BE COMPLETED BY THE END OF THE FIRST QUARTER OF 2013. THE TRANSACTION WILL THEN BE SUBJECT TO APPROVAL FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF THE STATE INSTITUTIONS OF HIGHER LEARNING.

Cleveland School Court
A federal judge says he'll rule after the first of the year on proposals to desegregate two schools in the Cleveland School District. The Bolivar Commercial reports that U.S. District Judge Glenn H. Davidson told attorneys after a Tuesday hearing in Oxford that he wanted to give the Department of Justice time to review and respond to information provided by the school district. The desegregation case dates back to 1965 when plaintiffs sued the Bolivar County school system, including Cleveland, to end white only and black-only schools. The school system has been under the federal courts oversight ever since. A dozen or more school systems in Mississippi have petitioned the federal courts to come out from under desegregation orders.

ENTERGY CORPORATION WILL RAISE IT'S MISSISSIPPI CUSTOMER BILLS TO PAY FOR HIGHER NATURAL GAS BILLS AS WELL AS COMPANY'S RECENT PURCHASE OF A JACKSON POWER PLANT. A RESIDENTIAL CUSTOMER WHO USES 1 THOUSAND KILOWATT HOURS PER MONTH WILL SEE THEIR BILL RISE 8 DOLLARS AND 29 CENTS. ENTERGY'S  AVERAGE RESIDENTIAL CUSTOMER IN MISSISSIPPI USED 1 THOUSAND 300 AND 26 KILOWATT HOURS PER MONTH IN 2011 COMMISSIONERS VOTED 3 TO 0 TO APPROVE THE INCREASE ENTERGY SAYS NATURAL GAS PRICES HAVE RISEN BY ONE-THIRD SINCE THE LAST TIME THE COMPANY FILED TO RECOUP FUEL COST IN AUGUST.

Arkansa Woman Arrest
An Arkansas man has been arrested for false pretense in Sunflower County, announced Attorney General Jim Hood today. Seth Bradshaw, 35, of Pigott, Arkansas and formerly of Sunflower County, has been arrested following indictment by a Sunflower County Grand Jury on three counts of false pretense.  Bradshaw is alleged to have leased hunting land ,which he did not own.  The indictment alleges that Bradshaw took money from three separate victims to the tune of approximately $30,000. Bradshaw was arrested with the assistance of the Sunflower County Sheriff’s Office, where he was booked.  If convicted, he faces up to 30 years (10 years each count) behind bars.  As with all cases, the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. The case was investigated by Roger Cribb of the Attorney General’s Public Integrity Division and will be prosecuted by the division director, Assistant Attorney General Stan Alexander.

Greenwood Bomb Threat
GREENWOOD POLICE ARE INVESTIGATING A HOSPITAL BOMB THREAT. A BOMB THREAT CALL WAS MADE TO GREENWOOD LEFLORE HOSPITAL AROUND 4-30 THIS MORNING. A PORTION OF THE HOSPITAL WAS QUICKLY SHUTDOWN.  GREENWOOD POLICE AND FIRE DEPARTMENTS BOTH RESPONDED TO THE CALL. THE HOSPITAL WAS NOT EVACUATED. THIS IS JUST ONE OF MORE THAN 30 BOMB THREATS CALLED INTO OVER FIFTY PUBLIC ENTITIES ACROSS MISSISSIPPI WITHIN THE LAST WEEK. CHIEF PURNELL SAYS HE'S WORKING WITH THE GREENWOOD LEFLORE EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT TO INVESTIGATE THIS BOMB THREAT.

Carwash Accident
A WOMAN IS RECOVERING FROM INJURIES AFTER CRASHING HER VEHICLE INTO A GREENVILLE CARWASH. THE ACCIDENT HAPPEN AROUND 10 THIS MORNING AT SOUTH RIDGE SUPER SUD CAR WASH ON HIGHWAY ONE SOUTH. GREENVILLE POLICE SAY THE FEMALE DRIVER OF THIS JEEP WAS SUFFERS FROM NONE LIFE THREATENING INJURIES. SHE WAS TAKEN BY AMBULANCE TO DELTA REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER. ACCORDING TO POLICE THE WOMAN PASSED OUT WHILE DRIVING SOUTH ON HIGHWAY ONE WHICH LED TO THE CRASH.

2- Bolivar County Men entered an Agreement
AN OXFORD ATTORNEY SETS THE RECORD STRAIGHT ABOUT HIS CLIENT'S ENTERING AN AGREEMENT WITH THE MISSISSIPPI ATTORNEY GENERAL'S OFFICE. DOCTOR HARVEY JACKSON AND REVEREND JACK KING WERE FACING FALSE PRETENSE AND GENERAL FRAUD CHARGES IN A CASE BY THE ATTORNEY GENERAL'S OFFICE INVOLVING TWO VICTIMS AND OVER 200-THOUSAND DOLLARS. TOM FREELAND, THEIR ATTORNEY, SAYS THE MEN AGREED TO ENTER A PRE-TRIAL DIVERSION PROGRAM, AND AFTER COMPLETION OF THE PROGRAM, THE CHARGES AGAINST THEM WILL BE DISMISSED WITH PREJUDICE AND THE CASES AGAINST THEM WILL BE RETIRED TO THE FILES, PASSED FROM THE TRIAL DOCKET, AND MADE INACTIVE. FREELAND SAYS JACKSON AND KING DID NOT AND WILL NOT ENTER GUILTY PLEAS. THE PRE-TRIAL DIVERSION PROGRAM IS BEING HANDLED AS A NON-CRIMINAL MATTER WITH THE APPROVAL OF THE COURT, THE BOLIVAR COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY'S OFFICE, AND THE TWO INVESTORS AS AN AGREED RESTITUTION PLAN. FREELAND SAYS HIS CLIENTS STRONGLY BELIEVE THIS RESOLUTION, WHICH ENDS THE PROSECUTION, IS THE BEST FOR THEIR COMMUNITY AND THE INVESTORS.

Indianola Murder
A SHOOTING OVER THE WEEKEND LEAVES ONE MAN DEAD  AND ANOTHER IN JAIL INDIANOLA POLICE SAY IT ALL STARTED AT THE ROYAL....APARTMENTS OFF GILLESPIE DRIVE SHORTLY AFTER 10 SATURDAY NIGHT. POLICE SAY 20 YEAR OLD MARK HANEY AND 26 YEAR OLD LONNIE BROOKS GOT INTO A VERBAL ALTERCATION. THAT IS WHEN POLICE SAY MARK HANEY SHOT BROOKS. HANEY IS BEING CHARGED WITH MURDER AND IS CURRENTLY IN JAIL WITH NO BOND. THE CASE IS STILL UNDER INVESTIGATION .

Clarksdale Murder
AN ELDERLY CLARKSDALE WOMAN IS DEAD. 80 YEAR OLD WIDOWED WHITE FEMALE WAS ROBBED, MURDERED, AND BURNED AT HER HOME DOWNTOWN ON THE CORNER OF ISSAQUEENA AND FIRST STREET. JUST AROUND 3PM CLARKSDALE POLICE MADE ENTRY INTO THE HOME WHERE THEY FOUND ETHEL LEWIS BODY STILL IN FLAMES, CAPTAIN ROBBIE LINLEY SAYS HE RECEIVED INFORMATION ABOUT THE SUSPECT FLEEING TO RULEVILLE IN A WHITE TOYOTA AVALON THAT WAS STOLEN FROM THE LEWIS'S HOME.  THE SUSPECT'S VEHICLE WAS SPOTTED BY THE MISSISSIPPI HIGHWAY PATROL HEADING IN THE DIRECTION OF RULEVILLE.  4 BLACK MALES FLED THE VEHICLE ON FOOT INTO THE WOODS OF NORTH SUNFLOWER COUNTY. INVESTIGATORS ARE STILL TRYING TO FIGURE OUT HOW THE 3 PASSENGERS CAME INTO THE VEHICLE. A 17-YEAR OLD BLACK MALE WAS TAKEN INTO CUSTODY AND IS NOW AT THE COAHOMA COUNTY JAIL WHERE HE SHOULD BE ARRAIGNED MONDAY MORNING FOR HOME INVASION, ROBBERY AND MURDER.  LINLEY SAYS THE OTHER THREE MEN IN THE VEHICLE WERE HELD BUT NOT TAKEN INTO CUSTODY. AUTHORITIES ARE NOW WAITING FOR AN AUTOPSY REPORT FOR THE CAUSE OF DEATH. ABC 6 NEWS WILL CONTINUE TO UPDATE THIS STORY.

ANOTHER GREENWOOD LEFLORE HOSPITAL NURSE IS FOUND DEAD WITHIN NINE DAYS. AUTHORITIES FINDING THE BODY OF 48 YEAR OLD KATRINA HEMPHILL EARLY THURSDAY MORNING IN HER HOME ON COUNTY ROAD 264 NEAR VAIDEN.  CARROLL COUNTY SHERIFF JERRY CARVER SAYS IT APPEARS SHE WAS STABBED MULTIPLE TIMES.  THE 42 YEAR OLD FLOOR NURSE LAST SEEN WEDNESDAY EVENING AROUND 5-30.  HEMPHILL LIVED WITH HER HUSBAND BUT OFFICIALS SAY HE WAS IN TENNESSEE WORKING AT THE TIME OF THE CRIME.  HER BODY HAS BEEN TAKEN TO JACKSON FOR AN AUTOPSY.  RIGHT NOW INVESTIGATORS DO NOT HAVE A MOTIVE OR ANY LEADS TO THIS CRIME. Yazoo Fire
Two people have been injured in a propane gas explosion just outside the Yazoo City city limits.  Firefighters first thought it may be a meth lab, but a leaking propane tank appears to be the cause. Fifty-three-year-old Robert Flannigan told Yazoo Chief Deputy Joseph Head he smelled gas around nine this morning. He said the explosion occurred just as he was lighting a cigarette. Flannigan was taken to UMMC by Aircare helicopter and is listed in critical condition. Kimberly Martin is also at UMMC, in serious condition. A spokesman says both will probably be transferred to burn centers. The trailer is located in the 3800 block of Washington Street.

DESPITE MUCH OPPOSITION--PARTICIPANTS IN TODAY'S MEETING WERE ADVOCATES OF THE IDEA OF EXPANDING MEDICAID IN MISSISSIPPI. MANY SUPPORTERS SPEAKING ON THE BENEFITS OF ACCEPTING SUCH A PLAN AND EXPRESSING WHAT IT MEANS FOR OUR COMMUNITY. LEADERS BROUGHT TO THE FOREFRONT THOSE IN THE COMMUNITY WHO STRUGGLE TO PAY FOR HEALTHCARE BECAUSE OF LACK OF HEALTH INSURANCE. ALSO SPEAKING TODAY WERE GUEST FROM UNITED HEALTHCARE.  THE ORGANIZATION SERVES SEVEN COUNTIES INCLUDING BOLIVAR, COAHOMA, QUITMAN...SUNFLOWER...TALLAHATCHIE...TUNICA...AND WASHINGTON COUNTY.

Greenville Man Detention Hearing
A FEDERAL DETENTION HEARING FOR A GREENVILLE MAN TUESDAY IS CANCELLED PENDING THE OUTCOME OF A PSYCHIATRIC MEDICAL EXAM ASSISTANT U.S. ATTORNEY JOHN ALEXANDER FILING THE MOTION LAST WEEK FOR ERRICK BROWN TO BE EXAMINED BY AT A MEDICAL CENTER OR APPROPRIATE FACILITY DESIGNATED BY THE FEDERAL BUREAU OF PRISONS TO DETERMINE IF BROWN IS SUFFERING FROM MENTAL ILLNESS.  BROWN INDICTED BY A FEDERAL GRAND JURY IN OXFORD LAST MONTH ON UNLAWFUL TRANSPORT OF FIREARMS CHARGE. THE CHARGE STEMMING FROM AN INCIDENT A CLEVELAND HOTEL IN WHICH HE WAS HOLDING AN ASSAULT RIFLE POINTED INTO THE AIR. AUTHORITIES LATER FINDING A LOADED SHOTGUN, A LOADED PISTOL AND 694 ROUNDS OF AMMUNITION.  BROWN INITIALLY TELLING ATF OFFICIALS HE PURCHASED THE GUNS AND AMMUNITION LEGALLY WITH AGENTS LATER FINDING OUT HE DID NOT.  BROWN ALSO CONVICTED IN THE LOWER COURTS FOR MISDEMEANOR DOMESTIC ASSAULT VIOLENCE IN WASHINGTON COUNTY BUT STILL VIOLATING A PROTECTIVE ORDER COMMITTING MORE ACTS OF ABUSE.

Statutory Rape Investigation
POLICE INVESTIGATE AN ATTEMPTED STATUTORY RAPE CASE AFTER A GREENVILLE MAN IS ACCUSED OF ATTEMPTING SEX WITH A MINOR. POLICE SAY 22-YEAR OLD DAVID TURNER IS IN CUSTODY AFTER ALLEGEDLY ATTEMPTING TO HAVE SEX WITH A 16-YEAR OLD GIRL. ACCORDING TO OFFICIALS TURNER PICKED THE GIRL UP AND DROVE TO THE TOP OF THE LEVEE IN DOWNTOWN GREENVILLE. THIS IS WHEN--ACCORDING TO THE POLICE REPORT--THE 22-YEAR OLD ATTEMPTED TO BE INTIMATE WITH THE TEEN. POLICE SAY THE GIRL WAS ABLE TO GET AWAY--NO INJURIES WERE REPORTED. MEANWHILE...TURNER'S 150-THOUSAND DOLLAR BOND WAS REDUCED TO 35-THOUSAND DOLLARS.

Shoplifting Arrest
A GREENVILLE WOMAN IS TAKEN INTO POLICE CUSTODY AFTER ATTEMPTING TO STEAL SEVERAL ITEMS FROM A LOCAL RETAILER. ACCORDING TO POLICE...24-YEAR OLD RITA RICE WAS CAUGHT BY THE WAL-MART LOSS PREVENTION STAFF WHEN SHE TRIED TO STEAL PRODUCTS FROM THE STORE. POLICE SAY RICE WAS TRYING TO TAKE FEMININE ITEMS...BABY WIPES...AND CLOTHES BY PLACING THEM IN A BASKET WITHOUT PAYING FOR THEM. POLICE SAY SHE ATTEMPTED TO LEAVE THE STORE AND WAS ARRESTED AND CHARGED WITH FELONY SHOPLIFTING. RICE'S 15-THOUSAND DOLLAR BOND WAS REDUCED TO FIVE-THOUSAND DOLLARS.

Greenville Man Indicted
A FEDERAL GRAND JURY INDICTS A GREENVILLE MAN ON UNLAWFUL TRANSPORT OF FIREARMS. THE CHARGE STEMS FROM AN INCIDENT HAPPENING IN THE PARKING LOT OF A CLEVELAND HOTEL.  AIRICK RHAEMON BROWN ALLEGEDLY HOLDING AN ASSAULT RIFLE SHOULDERED POINTED INTO THE AIR LATER SURRENDERING TO CLEVELAND POLICE WHO LATER FOUND A LOADED SHOTGUN, A LOADED PISTOL AND 694 ROUNDS OF AMMUNITION INSIDE HIS VEHICLE.  COURT DOCUMENTS STATE BROWN  TELLING A-T-F OFFICIALS HE PURCHASED THE GUNS LEGALLY BUT AGENTS LATER LEARNING HE DID NOT.  ALSO FEDERAL AUTHORITIES CONSIDER BROWN TO BE A DANGER TO SOCIETY NOT ONLY BECAUSE OF THE WEAPONS CHARGE BUT HAVING BEEN CONVICTED OF MISDEMEANOR DOMESTIC ASSAULT VIOLENCE IN WASHINGTON COUNTY AND STILL VIOLATING A PROTECTIVE ORDER COMMITTING MORE ACTS OF ABUSE - A DETENTION HEARING IS SET FOR NEXT WEEK IN GREENVILLE FEDERAL COURT.

A FORMER BELKS EMPLOYEE IS ARRESTED ON CHARGES OF FELONY EMBEZZLEMENT. IT IS OUR TOP STORY. GREENVILLE POLICE ARRESTING 28-YEAR OLD CHARMIKA FLOWERS OF MOORHEAD TODAY. POLICE SAY FLOWERS WAS CAUGHT GIVING OUT A 500-DOLLAR STORE GIFT CARD TO A CUSTOMER--POLICE SAY SHE DID NOT MAKE THE CUSTOMER PAY FOR THE CARD. REPORTS SHOW THE INCIDENT HAPPENING BACK IN SEPTEMBER AND WAS REPORTED TO POLICE LAST MONTH. NO BOND OR COURT DATE HAS BEEN SET.

Holmes Co. Missing Man
THE SEARCH CONTINUES FOR THE BODY OF A MISSING HOLMES COUNTY MAN IN CARROLL COUNTY. SHERIFF WILLIE MARCH SAYS THE SEARCH STEMS FROM A CHICAGO MAN CONFESSING TO KILLING DARIUS DAVIS OF PICKENS. THE 32-YEAR-OLD DAVIS DISAPPEARING WITHOUT A TRACE IN SEPTEMBER. THE SHERIFF SAYS DAVIS WAS GOING TO ON HIS WAY TO MEMPHIS TO PICK UP A NEW VEHICLE HE FOUND ON LINE WITH RAYFORD MEEKS AND MEEKS' UNCLE BERNARD WEEKS BUT NEVER REACHING HIS FINAL DESTINATION.  BOTH MEN HAVE BEEN ARRESTED IN CONNECTION IN THE POSSIBLE KILLING OF DAVIS. MARCH SAYS HIS DEPUTIES ALONG WITH CARROLL COUNTY DEPUTIES ARE SEARCHING THE DUCK HILL AREA WHERE DAVIS' BODY IS BELIEVED TO BE BURIED.

Greenwood Death Investigation
A DEATH INVESTIGATION IS UNDERWAY AFTER A GREENWOOD NURSE IS FOUND DEAD INSIDE HER APARTMENT. CHIEF HENRY PURNELL SAYS HIS DEPARTMENT RECEIVED A PHONE CALL FROM A CONCERNED FRIEND ABOUT JENNIFER TASHA LARRY. HE SAYS THE 27 YEAR OLD CALLED OUT SICK FRIDAY FROM HER PLACE OF EMPLOYMENT, GREENWOOD LEFLORE HOSPITAL AND WAS OFF FROM WORK ON MONDAY AND TUESDAY WITH NO ONE HEARING FROM HER SINCE.   AROUND 10-14 THIS MORNING, OFFICERS WENT TO HER APARTMENT AT 103 RIVERVIEW AND FOUND HER LIFELESS BODY IN THE BEDROOM.  PURNELL SAYS THERE WERE NO SIGNS OF FOUL PLAY BUT STILL CALLED IN THE MISSISSIPPI CRIME LAB TO CONDUCT AN INVESTIGATION.  LARRY'S BODY HAS BEEN SENT TO THE CRIME LAB FOR AN AUTOPSY TO DETERMINE CAUSE AND MANNER OF DEATH.

THE CITY OF SUNFLOWER IS ELECTING A NEW MAYOR TO OFFICE. THE CLOUDS AND RAIN DIDN'T STOP RESIDENTS FROM COMING OUT AND EXERCISING THEIR RIGHT TO VOTE.  CITY CLERK JOYCE WALKER SAYS TURNOUT HAS BEEN STEADY WITH VOTERS CASTING THEIR BALLOTS FOR THE CITY'S NEXT MAYOR.  ALDERMAN AT LARGE AND VICE MAYOR WENDY STEWART FACES FORMER POLICE CHIEF BILLY WEEKS FOR THE POSITION HELD BY MICHAEL PEMBLETON JUNIOR UNTIL HIS RESIGNATION IN OCTOBER.  WITH 859 REGISTERED VOTERS, WALKER IS CONFIDENT A WINNER COULD BE ANNOUNCED BY EIGHT O-CLOCK TONIGHT.  OF COURSE WE WILL HAVE THE RESULTS ON YOUR NEWS AT TEN.

Greenwood Murder for Hire Update
GREENWOOD ONCOLOGIST ARNOLD SMITH HAS ASKED A FEDERAL JUDGE TO THROW OUT A CAPITAL MURDER CHARGE RELATED TO A SHOOTOUT AT A LOCAL LAW OFFICE. IT IS AN ISSUE THAT HAS TWICE BEEN REJECTED BY STATE COURTS. SMITH IS SCHEDULED FOR TRIAL IN APRIL.  THE GREENWOOD COMMONWEALTH REPORTS THAT SMITH'S ATTORNEY, WILLIAM BELL, FILED THE LAWSUIT IN FEDERAL COURT THIS PAST WEEK. SMITH WAS ARRESTED APRIL 29TH, THE MORNING AFTER A SHOOTOUT AT THE OFFICE OF GREENWOOD ATTORNEY LEE ABRAHAM. SMITH IS ACCUSED OF OFFERING KEAIRA BYRD $20,000 TO KILL ABRAHAM. SMITH HAS BEEN INDICTED ON A CHARGE OF CAPITAL MURDER FOR THE DEATH OF BYRD AND CHARGES OF CONSPIRACY TO COMMIT THE MURDER. ABRAHAM WAS NOT INJURED.   SMITH HAS CLAIMED HE IS BEING ILLEGALLY DETAINED.
