Breast Cancer Statistic

In 2007, an estimated 178,480 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed among women, as well as an estimated 62,030 additional cases of in situ breast cancer. The expected number of new breast cancers in 2007 is markedly lower than the estimate for 2005 in the previous Breast Cancer Facts & Figures report due to the use of a new, more accurate estimation method and a small decline in the breast cancer incidence rate.

In 2007, approximately 40,460 women are expected todie from breast cancer (Table 2, page 4). Only lung cancer accounts for more cancer deaths in women.5

In 2007, about 2,030 cases of breast cancer are expected to occur among men, accounting for about 1% of all breast cancers.5 Approximately 450 men will
die from breast cancer.

Breast cancer is the leading cancer among white and African American women. African American women are more likely to die from this disease.

Breast cancer incidence in women has increased from one in 20 in 1960 to one in eight today.
